On July 31, 2021, Chief Minister Hemant Soren took a significant step toward enhancing the quality of education for Jharkhand's students by initiating the transformation of government schools into 'Schools of Excellence.' In the initial phase, 80 schools spread across all districts of the state are being revamped into these outstanding educational institutions. The government aims to extend this transformation to 329 block schools in the second phase and over 4,000 panchayat-level schools in the third phase, ultimately aiming to elevate them to the status of 'Schools of Excellence' with a world-class education system. These schools will boast essential amenities such as uninterrupted power supply, a clean environment, and smart boards, aligning them with the model of private schools.

The State Government of Jharkhand established 89 Model Schools during the 2010-11 and 2011-12 sessions. Student selection for these schools is based on an independent selection test. One of these model schools, initially known as Model School Kanke in Ranchi, is now recognized as CM School of Excellence, Kanke, Ranchi. Established in 2012, Model School Kanke is situated in Mesra, Kanke, Ranchi, with a PIN code of 835217, Jharkhand, India. It provides secondary (6-12) level education and is managed by the Department of Education. The medium of instruction is English, and the school is co-educational. The school was previously affiliated with the State Board for both secondary and high secondary levels, and presently, affiliation with CBSE is underway under the Adarsh Vidyalaya/CM School of Excellence scheme.
